FLOORBOARD REPAIRS EXPERTS
Despite being pretty tough, floorboards are not indestructible. Being the subject of more wear and tear than any other part of your house, your floors are certain to sustain some damage over the years. Whether it be damage from pets, water damage, abrasions and scratches, broken floor boards or joists, or any other damage to your floor, Beach Floors can help you with your floor board repairs.
There are a couple parts to the process of repairing your floorboards. First, it must be determined which floorboards have sustained damage and whether they need to be replaced. Some damage can be treated by sanding and polishing to replace a damaged section of varnish where the wood was left unharmed. Once we have determined which floorboards need to be removed, we will need to find flooring that matches the look of the floorboards. This can be tricky when the flooring has aged and the colour has darkened. Some of this stress can be alleviated by replacing the boards when the floor is already in need of sanding and refinishing to get an even look.
The damaged floorboards will be removed by sawing relief cuts into the boards and pulling the tongue out from the neighbouring groove. Once the damaged floorboards have been removed, the grooves of the adjacent boards should be cleaned thoroughly wherever the edges are exposed.
The replacement boards will have to be modified to fit into the already assembled floor: The bottom side of the groove will be removed from the new boards. This will allow the boards to fit into the groove of the adjacent piece and slip down into place over the tongue of the opposite board. This might require the use of a mallet to tap the board down into place. Once the boards are all in place and flush with one another, the boards will be secured, generally with nails, to the joists.
Any boards that have been replaced during this process will be unvarnished and will require varnishing. This is why it makes the most sense to replace your damaged floorboards when you plan to get your floor sanded and varnished. Any slight variation in colour or appearance with the new replacement boards should fade as the floor is sanded and varnished and as the floor is polished as a unit.
These basic tips for floor board repair might seem simple enough, but there are plenty of processes by which a homeowner might be confused.
